Severe Storms to continue on Monday

2008-10-05 17:54

A trough that has been slowly making its way north across the eastern inland will reach the NSW/QLD border on Monday, and is likely to trigger Severe storms.

Today, Sunday, storms fired up near the trough in NSW, QLD, SA and the NT, with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for the Channel Country, Maranoa and Darling Downs districts in QLD.

As the trough moves closer to the tropical east coast on Monday, the moisture supply for potential storms will increase, raising the chance of severe storms developing.

The most likely areas to be affected are the Darling Downs of QLD and the Northern Tablelands of NSW, in the areas around Charleville, Goondiwindi, Armidale and Moree. Storms will then move towards the coast on the afternoon.

Very strong winds not far above the surface and high moisture levels could bring damaging wind gusts and very heavy rainfall with the storms.

Hot weather sizzling across QLD

2008-10-04 18:11

It was quite a warm day today across parts of Queensland, with some of the warmest overnight temperatures this early in spring.

Thargomindah in the Channel Country only dipped to around 28 degrees last night, which is the warmest overnight minimum on record for October, 11 above average. Most places in QLD's west were at least 5 to 8 above the overnight average.

The day continued to remain hot out west, with Cloncurry, Urandangie and Bedourie, to name a few, topping on or above 40 degrees.

Further east, temperatures have remained about average. Brisbane itself reached 27 degrees, almost bang on average. It was similar along the rest of the coast.

Over the next few days, winds are expected to increase from the northwest, dragging warm air from the interior to the coast. Tomorrow Brisbane is forecast to reach 31, and get to 33 on Monday, with the chance of a late storm.

Coldest October day in 2 years for Sydney

2008-10-05 17:49

After one of the hottest early Spring days on record last Friday at 35 degrees, Sydney has plummeted 18 degrees to record the coldest October day in 2 years.

The maximum temperature today was recorded shortly after midnight. During daylight hours, the temperature has not gone above 16.5 degrees, making it the coldest day in 2 weeks and the coldest October day since 2006.

Most of the city recorded its best rain in a month on Saturday. This left high surface moisture levels, transformed into blanket cloud cover today as easterlies on the coast and cool westerlies inland converged and forced air upwards.

Tomorrow will see cloud start to break up - and thus a warmer day - as a trough moves north and drier air pushes over NSW ahead a cold front.

Showers will persist however, with another few millimetres expected tonight and again Monday evening as the cold change moves over the city.
